My personal experience in the introduction to new media class
Taking the introduction to new media class has honestly been one of the most eye - opening experiences for me. When the semester began, I thought we were only going to talk about social media platforms and how they work. But the class ended up teaching me much deeper things that have changed the way I see and use new media every day. so now I know how to use Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok.
Here are three new things I learned that really impacted me.
1. Understanding How media converges: one thing that really stood out to me was learning about media convergence. Before this class l used to see tv, radio, social media, blogs and the internet as separate things. I didn't realize how much they connect and influence each other.
Now, when I watch or read something online, I notice how the same content appears across different platforms. This has made me more aware of how information travels and how content creators use multiple channel to reach people.
2. Realizing the power of participation online: Another new thing I learned is participatory culture. I used to think that social media belonged mostly to influencers and big content creators. I didn't see myself as someone who could contribute in a meaningful way. But this class helped me understand that everyone who posts, comments, shares, edits, or reacts is part of the media space. Because of this, I have started engaging more online. I now see my comments, reactions, and small posts as contributions that matter.
3. Becoming Digital Responsible:
The lesson that has changed me the most is digital literacy. I didn't know how much algorithms, privacy settings, misinformation, and digital footprints could affect me. This class has made me more careful about what I share, the kind of content I believe, and how I protect myself online. I now think twice before posting and make sure the information I spread is true.
HOW THESE LESSON CHANGED My VIEW OF NEW MEDIA
Because of what I have learned, my perception of new media has completely changed. I now see it is:
Not just a fun place, but a powerful communication space
A platform where everyone, including me, can create and influence the media
A digital environment where I must be responsible and intentional
I use new media more purposefully now. I take part in discussions, protect my privacy, and pay more attention to how content shapes people's opinions.
In conclusion,
My experience in the introduction to new media class has been truly meaningful. It has helped me understand the digital world better and shaped the way I interact with it. The things I have learned will continue to guide me as I navigate social media, online platforms, and the fast- changing world of new media.
